“Good to have Friends” was part of a series of touring shows for nursery age children that were created by young mainly apprentice age students and performers as “learners under instruction.” This play was first created by a “first timer,” and she and Roger Goslyn composed most of the songs, which are great fun still.
However the plot became a bit too complicated, so a simplified version called “Good to have Friends” was pulled together. It had a long touring life, visiting over a hundred nurseries and community groups, and making regular appearances at all London’s small and mid scale theatres as part of their Saturday matinee programmes for children.
These plays slotted into any medium sized empty space in church hall or larger classroom, and though created for urban settings would work just as well for nursery and younger school groups anywhere.
The work took the name of our fledgling company quite long distances across London, and helped to build up a regular demand for similar work at Christmas and in the summer.
The classic theme of a child on the first day of nursery stands the test of time, and the show is still a good potential vehicle for young performers and audiences. A series of similar shows were later made by myself and others, and did play a developmental role for the company.
