Mrs Plug the Plumber

Mrs Plug the Plumber Story Line

The Kid, a mischievous small boy, is taken by Azaph his Tutor to the theatre. The Tutor is a serious fellow who is anxious for his pupil to learn to read. The play ‘Mrs Plug the Plumber’ is  based on the original book. Azaph and the Kid have  brought the book to the show with them, but The Kid has a bad attitude to the subject of reading! The story starts to unfold on stage; suddenly the Kid takes a run and joins in the action, followed by his distressed (and embarrassed) tutor.

So this is the plot:

Mrs Plug and her hubby  lead a happy, role reversed life. Mrs Plug mends pipe work, routs robbers and stops ships from sinking, while Mr Plug finds her plumbers bag for her, supportively makes tea, and looks after the twins. The play, following closely to the book’s story and glorious illustrations, features Mrs Plug’s many adventures, and colourful child and adult characters all saved by her heroic deeds. After a sea voyage, at the end of the story everyone arrives happily home again – and the Kid has learned to read!

About the Book

The book ‘Mrs Plug the Plumber’ was very popular in the 1980’s, and onward. It playfully discussed radical new ideas, and was a great choice for early learners in the reading department – a winning mix for the then New Peckham Varieties’ company. As part of the ‘Happy Families’ series it is still available on Amazon.

The show had three complete productions, toured many small and mid scale venues in the London area and later ran for three weeks at our converted theatre venue in Havil Street.

From the Happy Families series by Allan and Janet Ahlberg.
