It’s a day in midsummer in South London, around the end of the Summer term. A diverse group of young people are moving into the start of adult life. Over a day and a night, the impact of social and class divisions change the lives of many characters in the story. Jimmy Naylor, son of Naylor’s Secondhand and Antique Yard, is a scholarship boy at a respected private school. Jimmy and his friend Bernard meet at the nets for cricket practice before school each day. Tensions for Jimmy are intensified when other young people of the town discover the clash between his home and school lives. As darkness comes a paper chase organised by the local church leads to crazy happenings in the junk yard and some shocking turns of events for young people and adults alike.
Naylor’s Yard was written for a mixed group of young teenagers, of very varying social classes, and ethnicity. The play looked at some of these issues, and technically and character wise was a bit of a challenge, extending the range of their skill.
